Virtual tour creation workflow

We live in Switzerland and travel in the Cyclades only 10 to 12 weeks every year, in May-June and September-October. To be able to create virtual tours for local companies during our travels, we have a very precise workflow.

Please take it into account, it's quite important!

In theory, creating a virtual tour is "Point - Shoot - Upload - Connect" with a 360° camera and a smartphone.

In reality, achieving good results is much more complicated, and as we give you much more than just a virtual tour, there is a lot of additional work.

As soon as you show interest, we spot your place on Google Maps to analyze your needs and imagine the best solution for you.

Our virtual tours are highly personalized, as there are special features such as the additional integration in the Pictorial Guide of the Cyclades.

Moreover, the size and location of your place are important: a tavern or a bar may need less panoramas than a big restaurant. A big hotel will need more panoramas than a small one. Integration in one of our popular "virtual strolls" (or creation of a new stroll) needs to be analyzed too.

We send you an estimate for the final cost, without commitment.

The basic price is 300 euros all taxes included for 8 panoramas. If you need less than 8 panoramas, there will be a special discount and, if you need more, some additional costs.

There may also be a special offer if your place is located in an area where we have not yet developed any project, or where a "virtual stroll" needs to be extended.

We visit your place and imagine the plan of your virtual tour. This plan has to be set according to the budget. Or the budget has to be redefined according to the ideal plan we imagine.

Anyway, you decide!

To keep things simple and quick, we require a payment in cash, before we start the shooting. If you need it, we give you a signed receipt mentioning our details and your Tax ID and Fiscal Office.

If you don't know us yet, feel free to check our portfolio and ask our clients for information about us!

The shooting doesn't take a lot of time but must be thoroughly planned. We have to respect the privacy rules of Google and find the ideal moment. The weather should be fine too, to get the best results.

We use 360° cameras at 24 and 30 million pixels, with two fisheye lens (front and back). The result is two 190° pictures that we have to stitch together. For each panorama, we make shots with different camera settings to be able to select the best one. The shooting is monitored with a smartphone app and, on each shot, the GPS coordinates are added in the invisible EXIF data of the picture, with a precision of 20 m in open air.

Both 190° pictures have to be stitched together to produce a full 360° panorama. We do this with a dedicated software but we can show you a smartphone preview if you wish.

We do the real stitching later in the quietness of our hotel room, to get the best results...

After the stitching of all shots, we have different versions of each panorama. It's time to check them one by one and select the best.

This is the most time-consuming process, as every panorama is processed separately. We don't use batch processing, so as to achieve the best results.

On the computer, we enhance each panorama (colours, contrast) and we mask or remove undesired artefacts (tripod, shadow of the tripod).

The panoramas are then ready but formatted in JPEG without compression (12 to 24 MB each). We have yet to compress them, otherwise they will load slowly for the mobile user.

We can now upload the panoramas on Google Maps and Street View. A complicated and precise operation.

We re-import the final panoramas in the smartphone, import them in the Street View app, check them one by one and refine localization and orientation.

Then we upload them. But it's not yet the end of the work!

All panoramas are now online, waiting for approval by Google. Usually, they are approved quite quickly, and sometimes nearly immediately.

We have yet to interconnect them to create the virtual tour, and connect each of them with your Google profile. This is done with the Street View app.

The last operation, just to be sure everything is OK. Now we can start working on more features!

Your virtual tour is now available on Google Maps, Street View and Google My Business. It's time to start the promotion. This is your job, but we lend a hand...

We select one of the panoramas of your virtual tour, format it, post it in the Facebook page of the Pictorial Guide of the Cyclades, and share it in our dedicated group, with an announcement and a link to the virtual tour.

Such a post will get some 2,000 views (guaranteed minimum). Sometimes much more. And you can of course share it too, wherever you want!

All these tasks take a few days and most are performed during our travel. Usually you'll see the results before we go to another island! Due to available time, some tasks are delayed and done only after we return to Switzerland.

We have yet to create your pages on www.cyclades.mobi and www.pictorialguides.com, with all details (short description, link to website, phone, e-mail, localization, slideshow, virtual tour, links to Facebook page and TripAdvisor reviews if applicable), in English and in French.

These pages will be displayed in all relevant sections of our website, and wherever possible they will also be featured in the "virtual stroll" focused on the area.

Most of the time, we are too busy during our travels to work also on our website. Your personal webpages will usually be created after our return to Switzerland.

Everything is now ready to integrate your virtual tour in the "virtual strolls" section of our website. A time-consuming task, thanks for your patience!

All the new 360° panoramas, including their connections, are usually available on Google Maps and Street View a few days after the shooting, but we need some more time to make them available in the Pictorial Guide of the Cyclades!
