On the road connecting Lausanne to Avenches, former capital of Roman Helvetia, Lucens nestles in an idyllic landscape of valleys and hills, rivers and forests. Dominated by a proud castle, the small town hosts a unique Sherlock Holmes Museum.

The castle of Lucens served as a residence for the bishops of Lausanne from the end of the 13th century. Bishop Guillaume de Menthonay was murdered here in 1406 by his barber, who was tortured in the castle courtyard with burning pincers.

Sold in 1801 to private individuals, this beautiful castle cannot be visited. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's son moved there in 1965 and created the Sherlock Holmes Museum dedicated to his father's work.

Since 2001, the museum has been housed in the Maison Rouge ("Red House") below. In addition to books and objects relating to the famous detective imagined by Conan Doyle, furniture and personal belongings of the great British writer are also on display.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson's living room is a faithful reproduction based on the meticulous descriptions in the stories. It contains hundreds of authentic, sometimes strange and unusual objects.
