Martigny
Roman amphitheatre (2)

Before the amphitheatre was built, Martigny was known as Octuduron (or Oxtuduron), a Celtic city that controlled the passage to Savoy via the Forclaz Pass and to Italy via the Mont-Joux Pass (Great Saint Bernard). Conquered by the Romans around 15 BC, the town became Octodurus and then Forum Claudii Vallensium, in honour of the emperor Claudius, who ruled Rome after the assassination of Caligula.
